A History of the United Way Foundation

The United Way Foundation is a global network of non-profit organizations that are dedicated to providing resources and assistance to those in need. Founded in 1887, the foundation has become a leader in providing social services and resources to individuals and families in need.

The Mission of the United Way Foundation

The United Way Foundation works with a network of over 1,800 local United Ways, which are independent organizations operating in communities across the United States and in over 40 countries around the world. These local United Ways are dedicated to the same mission of providing resources, assistance, and support to those in need.

The Network of Local United Ways

The foundation works with local governments, businesses, and other non-profits to help people and families in need by giving them a wide range of services. Some of these services include money, food, clothes, health care, a place to live, and access to education and job training. Additionally, the foundation works to raise awareness about the issues facing those in need and to advocate for better policies and resources to help those in need.

The Services and Resources Provided

In 2021, the United Way Foundation and the 211.org network made over 18 million referrals for help and resources. People and families could use these referrals to get help from places like food banks and shelters, health care, job training and education, and more.

Financial Assistance for Those in Need

The United Way Foundation helps people in many ways, such as by giving them money, food, clothes, health care, a place to live, job training, education, and other services. Financial assistance may include help with rent or mortgage payments, paying utilities, and other forms of emergency financial aid. Help with food and clothes might include giving food and clothes to people and families in need, as well as giving food to food banks, pantries, and shelters.

Access to Health Care, Shelter, and Employment Resources

Health care assistance may include providing access to health care services, such as medical care, mental health care, and substance abuse treatment. Housing assistance may include providing housing options for individuals and families in need, such as emergency and transitional housing, as well as helping to secure more permanent housing options. Job training and education assistance may include providing job training and job placement services, as well as access to educational resources and opportunities.

The goal of the United Way Foundation is to give people and families in need the tools they need to make their lives better. Through its network of local United Ways, it has been able to provide over 18 million referrals for help and resources in 2022 and continues to work to provide comprehensive services to those in need.
